Effects of grasses on sapling establishment and the role of transplanted saplings on the light environment of pastures: implications for tropical forest restoration
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods: The establishment of four native fast-growing tree species in a tropical abandoned pasture was evaluated. Saplings of Cecropia obtusifolia, Hampea nutricia, Omphalea oleifera and Erythrina folkersii were transplanted using a split-plot design. Plant survival and growth were evaluated over 12 mo under two experimental treatments: presence and absence of grasses. Light incidence at ground level was used to evaluate microclimate conditions under the grass matrix, compared to light incidence under saplings established in the pasture.

Effect of Stand Structural Characteristics on Natural Regeneration of Acer Campestre L. in Arasbaran Forest
Natural regeneration is one of the key aspects of forest sustainability and a tool to decide on restoration programs in forest areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the quantity of natural regeneration of Acer campestre L. as one of the most important tree species in Arasbaran forests and its relationship with elevation changes and structural characteristics in the natural stands....
متن کاملUnpalatable plants facilitate tree sapling survival in wooded pastures
1. In endangered wooded pasture ecosystems established tree saplings are frequently found in spatial association with protective structures, suggesting nurse effects. This associational resistance is thought to be a driving force behind tree regeneration in wooded pastures. Experimental evidence for associational resistance is, however, scarce. We studied the effects of unpalatable plants on tr...
متن کاملInfluence of gap size and development stages on the silvicultural characteristics of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) regeneration
We studied 11 gaps covered with beech saplings (< 1.30 m tall) in a reserve compartment (compartment 139, district one, Langa forest, watershed 36: Kazemrood) of the Caspian beech forest in N Iran. Two transects, each 2 m wide, were laid along the longest (N-S) and shortest (E-W) axis of each gap. Five micro sample plots, each 4 m2, were established: one at the center, and one at each corner. Q...
متن کاملEffects of Prescribed Fires on Young Valley Oak Trees at a Research Restoration Site in the Central Valley of California
Woodland restoration sites planted with Quercus lobata (valley oak) often have serious invasions of nonnative annual grasses and thistles. Although prescribed fire can effectively control these exotics, restoration managers may be reluctant to use fire if it causes substantial mortality of recently planted saplings. We studied the effects of prescribed fires on the survival and subsequent growt...
متن کاملTree–Shrub Interactions During Early Secondary Forest Succession in Uganda
One of the greatest challenges for ecologists this century will be restoring forests on degraded tropical lands. This restoration will require understanding complex processes that shape successional pathways, including interactions between trees and other plants. Shrub species often quickly invade disturbed tropical lands, yet little is known about whether they facilitate or inhibit subsequent ...
